Decibel 62

Amplify your business conversation.

don't whisper. DON'T SHOUT. Converse.

Human conversation happens at about 62 decibels. That’s when we talk about our business most authentically and compellingly. Whispering can go unheard, come across as lacking in confidence or even sound sneaky. And shouting is just hard to be around; it’s irritating, often boastful and can make people root against you and your company. Be the company that's admired for its work, trusted for its integrity, and seen as deserving of its great success. Let's build that conversation.

Decibel 62 helps you:

  • Tap into the positive conversations that are already going on about your business.

  • Understand what makes your business conversation authentic, relevant, and different.

  • Develop a structure and tools to consistently bring what customers love about your business to the forefront as you create conversations with new prospects and customers.

  • Amplify your business conversations with strategic support in the areas of media relations, social media, industry leadership initiatives, business development and introductions, community relations, corporate sustainability, and philanthropy programs.

  • Safeguard your business reputation in times of crisis with programs and support before, during, and after an actual or potential incident.

"I am better than my reputation."

Friedrich Schiller

Each day, businesses make a choice whether to whisper, shout, or converse.

whisperers say:

“We do good work, but I’m not too comfortable with everything we do…let’s just see how it goes. Who knows? maybe a customer will tell a friend about us.”

shouters say:

“we want you to hear how great we are more than we want to understand what’s going on with you…getting loud and making exaggerated claims is just the way we roll.”

conversationalists say:

“Let’s talk about what’s happening (and what’s about to happen) with you and your customers. Your opportunities are unique, but the chaos you’re experiencing is not. Let’s take it all in and simplify things to help your customers take big steps forward.”

Authenticity wins in a smarter, better-informed world

Decibel 62 was formed by David Bruce, a 25-year practitioner of marketing, public relations, business development, and public affairs.

David began his career in field marketing, working with national restaurant chains including Subway, Wendy's, Popeyes, and I Can't Believe It's Yogurt, developing marketing programs and conducting more than 40 local store marketing seminars across the U.S.

He then took on a business development role with Miami-Dade's economic development organization, The Beacon Council, where he helped recruit organizations to establish operations and create jobs in South Florida, including MTV Networks, Apple, Ingram Micro, and the U.S. Southern Command.

David was then asked to join the global PR firm, Burson-Marsteller, as vice president and leader of its corporate practice for the state of Florida, where he served Fortune 500 clients including Scott Paper Company and Ryder System. There, he worked closely with crisis management expert Jim Dowling, the architect of Johnson & Johnson's response to the Tylenol contamination killings, and Jeff Hunt, author of Brand Under Fire. He is also acknowledged by former Burson-Marsteller CEO Chris Komisarjevsky in his book The Power of Reputation.

Next, David helped launch Enterprise Florida, the nation's first statewide public/private partnership for trade and economic development, serving as senior vice president of communications. In that role, his team helped organize several of the State's largest-ever trade initiatives, accompanying the Governor and business leaders on missions to Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Costa Rica, Mexico, England, and Scotland.

He then joined Fortune 500 transportation and logistics leader, Ryder System, where he led media relations and crisis response efforts for more than 15 years, becoming a vice president and an officer of the company, responsible for corporate communications, crisis management, public affairs, and community relations. He also served as executive director of the company's charitable foundation. In his time with Ryder, David served as communications counsel to 3 CEOs and led external and internal communications functions through a multi-year corporate turnaround that included nearly 20 acquisitions, profitable divestitures, entry and exit of international markets, transition of every key leadership position, and the launch of new products and services. The turnaround resulted in historic highs in annual revenue and earnings, and a more than 300% increase in share price.

Serving in diverse roles, David witnessed how technology, increased transparency, and instantaneous, low-cost access to deep sources of information have changed how individuals and groups make decisions and what they expect. He has also watched the decline of inauthentic, “propped-up” marketing and communications approaches. At its core, his approach seeks to infuse all communications with the same brevity, honesty, relevance, and respect for the audience that are the hallmarks of effective face-to-face conversations. David formed Decibel 62 in 2018 to help businesses identify intuitive, repeatable structures for influencing key stakeholders. He leverages a lean, ad hoc team of established resources in specialized areas of marketing, communications, design, public affairs, and more, to meet the breadth and scale of a client engagement.

David resides in the Buena Vista area of Miami and has two adult daughters. He is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. He has served on: The Beacon Council Executive Committee and Beacon Council Foundation board of directors, The Nat Moore Foundation board of directors, The University of Florida Public Relations Advisory Council, and The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, Stand Up Miami board of directors.
